Jubba White sits down with 10-year-old guest junior journalist Colton for a special Music Coast interview filmed at Gateway Discovery Park in Portland, Oregon.

Colton has been a fan of Jubba White for several years and regularly joins his mother, one of Music Coast’s photographers, at live shows. This time, we invited him to step in front of the camera and ask Jubba the questions he genuinely wanted answered.

They talk about Brazilian soccer great Ronaldo, family, advice for young musicians, Michael Jackson, the message behind “A Better World,” reggae, jazz and Latin American music, the influence of Jubba’s mother, and why the drums have remained at the center of his life since childhood.

One of the most meaningful moments comes near the end, when Jubba reminds Colton that interviewing an artist at age 10 already makes him a young journalist. Jubba also thanks him for years of support and for dancing and singing along to “Lively Groove.”

IN THIS INTERVIEW:

• Jubba’s favorite soccer player
• What he hopes Colton’s generation hears in “A Better World”
• Advice for young people who want to become musicians
• Why he connects with Michael Jackson’s “Human Nature” and “Heal the World”
• His experience with reggae, jazz, Caribbean and Latin American music
• How his mother encouraged his musical path
• Whether his two sons play music
• Why drums are his favorite instrument
• Beginning on a drum set at eight years old
• Jubba’s personal message to Colton
